According to historical sources, ancient Samarkand was founded in VIII century BC. Nowadays Samarkand is considered to be one of the largest cities of independent Uzbekistan and the center of Samarkand region. The anceint city has been the main trade center of Great Silk Road for ages. During 14th -15th centuries the city was capital of Timurids’ impire and considerable constructions were held by them. Pparticularly, in the period of Timurs’ governance Samarkand flourished, became center of culture and science and was admitted as a shining point of earth.



 Thanks to independence ever more attention is paying to the historical and cultural heritage of Samarkand. The government of  Uzbekistan is preserving the historical and cultural heritage of this ancient and ever young city with special care.  

After the proclamation of independence Samarkand acquired its modern view.  The sightseings were reconstructed. Registan ensemble, Shakhi Zinda complex, Timur’s mausoleum and other historical monuments were restored completely. From ancient times, the city is known with its paper, silk, atlas, inimitable handicrafts and ancient art music.        

At present, Samarkand  region is considered to be one of the huge industrial areas of Uzbekistan. There are many joint ventures in this area such as “Samarkand auto”, “JV MAN avto", "UrgGazKarpet", "Дака Текс", "Сам Антеп Гилам", "Pulsar Group Brewery", "Siyob saxоvati", "Сино", "Самарқандкимё" which contribute greatly to the industry of the country.



In 2014, the growth of GDP of Samarkand made up 110.5 percent. These results were initially reached by high growth rate in the spheres of industry, construction and service. In addition, production of consumption goods 17.3%, agriculture 6.9% and retail in 14.9%, paid service increased 17.6% and realization of aimed state programs. As a result, the rate of GDP increased by 1.1 against expected prognosis.    

In the same year, industry production rose 285.5, total service 333.9, paid service 140.5, consumption goods 193.7, agriculture productions 169.1, retail in 249.6 thousand soums per person. Attracted investment indicated 2.2 trillion, direct foreign investment 20.4 billion USA dollars.   




Samarkand takes one of the initial positions in educational sphere of Republic.  There are 8 high educational establishments, 161 professional colleges, 14 academic lyceums and 1233 schools on the territory of region. 3 regional, 2 city, 14 district, 10 net and administrative, 21 private newspapers, 6 magazines are being printed. One governmental and one non-governmental TV channel are working in progress.

Nowadays 4 theatres - music and drama theatre named after Khamid Olimjon, puppet theatre named after Asror Juraev, russian drama theatre named after Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and Kattakurgan drama theatre named after Abdulkhamid Majidiy, one state reserve museum with its 8 museum branches are in public use.    

Samarkand College of Arts, College of Olympic Reserve, Taylak College of Olympic Reserve , the Regional Boxing School , High Sport Skills School , hockey on grass, rowing sports, Samarkand Specialized School of Olympic Reserve, Children 's and youth sport school of the Olympic Reserve Training Center teach sport thousands of children. 

Today, for city’s population 37 fountains and 10 cultural parks are on serve.
