Multi award-winning Zulya Kamalova is a multifaceted artist as well as the leading proponent of original Tatar music in Australia and the world. Alone and together with her band, The Children of the Underground Zulya has produced eight critically acclaimed albums, which upon their release in Europe spent several months in the top 10 of European world music charts.
A native of Tatarstan-Udmurtia region of Central Russia, Zulya’s earlier recording s feature traditional and original songs in her distinctive Tatar style but with unusual instrumentation, presenting the traditional music from a new perspective. Since beginning collaboration with The Children of the Underground in 2003, Zulya’s music has further developed in surprising and intriguing directions. The band brings a new level of sophistication in arrangement and musicianship to Zulya’s work and showcase the band’s impressive facility with their instruments. Australia is a multicultural country and the music of Zulya and the Children of the Underground is truly Australian, with members of Tatar, Greek, Irish, German, Jewish and Scottish backgrounds.
Zulya and The Children of the Underground have enjoyed unprecedented success throughout their native Australia and abroad. They have toured Europe on numerous occasions - their latest appearance included the first inaugural Russian Womad, along with a National live to air broadcast at Vienna’s Radiokulturhaus, Austria. In 2012 Zulya was awarded “Honoured Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan”.
